이제는 잊혀지는...

한때 Progressive Rock 또는 Art Rock이라고 불리는 장르들이 각광을 받던 시절이 있었습니다..

 

대략 60년대 후반에서 80년대를 아울러 사랑을 받던 장르입니다.

 

수많은 밴드들이 백가쟁명 하듯이 경쟁을 했습니다만 80년대 들어 쇠퇴하기 시작했습니다.

 

한때 저는 Heavy Metal에 빠져 있던 시절이 있었습니다. 그 후, 듣던 장르가 Progressive Rock입니다.

 

어떤 곡은 30분이 넘는 대곡도 있고... ㅜㅜ

 

당시 전자악기와 클래식, 록, 재즈 등을 실험적으로 도입하기도 했습니다.

 

제가 사랑하는 Pink Floyd도 이 장르에 대표적인 밴드가 되겠습니다.

 

그중 클래식을 도입한 그룹은 Art Rock으로 불리기도 합니다.

 

뭐... 요즘 와 생각해보면 Rock에 무슨 장르가 있겠습니까? 당시에는 그랬다는 겁니다.

 

그런데 이 장르의 곡들이 지루하다고 생각하지만 의외로 멜로디가 뛰어난 곡들이 많습니다.

 

가끔 제가 소개하는 Moody Blues의 곡들도 그런 곡들이 많습니다.

 

그들의 대표곡인 Nights in white satin도 상당히 서정적인데요. 정말 좋습니다.

 

이 곡에 기댄 재미있는 이야기가 있는데요.

 

Barclay James Harvest라고 영국의 그룹이 있는데 이들에게 음악기자가 짝퉁 무디 블루스라고 비난한 적이 있습니다.

 

"Poor Man's Moody Blues" 라고...

 

그랬더니 그 그룹이 엉뚱하게 Moody Blues의 Nights in white satin의 기본 코드를 그대로 두고 곡을 재해석하여 노래를 발표합니다.

 

Moody Blues는 황당해하고... 

 

Nights in white satin의 영감을 받아 곡을 만들었다고 알려져 있습니다만.... ^^

 

Barclay James Harvest도 뭐 상당히 아름다운 곡을 만들어 냅니다.  그 곡 제목이 Poor Man's Moody Blues입니다.

 

가난한 남자의 침울한 블루스 정도 되겠네요... ^^
